At this morning’s Breakfast Matters we were introduced to Jo Cherrett, CEO of Trafford Leisure, who shared with us the Trafford Leisure and Trafford Council’s investment strategy and plans for Trafford over the next 5 years.
Trafford Leisure was established in Sept 2015, with a passion for making Trafford the most active place in the UK. They provide leisure and recreation activities and are the largest operator of sport and leisure facilities in Trafford with:
- 9 indoor facilities
- 31 outdoor venues
- Attract over 2 million visitors employ over 350 staff
- Help over 9,000 children learn to swim per year
- Help people to improve their health and well being
The £54 million leisure investment was approved in October 2018 by the Council and will cover the following indoor leisure facilities:
- Urmston – £6.95m
- Altrincham – £22.38m
- Stretford – £24.46m
The investment has plans to increase to cover Sale and Partington.
The key focus of the investment is primarily to improve the buildings but to also be customer focused and to increase the overall customer experience to be on a par with private leisure facilities.
The work on Urmston Leisure Centre is set to begin in the next 6 weeks with plans to open at the start of 2020.
Altrincham is about to announce their preferred contractor with a target date to take it to planning in Sept 2019 with a start date aiming for Jan/Feb 2020 ready for the centre to be completed in Jan 2022
Stretford – Aim to build a new centre with a similar time line as Altrincham, working alongside the current facilities in the area including the Lancashire Cricket ground.
Opportunities the investment brings:
- Engaging with local suppliers and contractors
- Partnership and sponsorship opportunities
- Retail opportunities including food and beverage
- Director recruitment
- Employment opportunities
- Workplace inactivity initiatives
Jo finished by saying there are 40,000 people in Trafford who do not have the recommended 30 mins of physical activity per week. Trafford Leisure has set up a partnership with local community partners in particular GP surgeries who now refer patients who would benefit from support and help to get started in being active, so far 1,800 patients have been introduced.
