Octobers Breakfast Matters

An introduction to Istanbul’s new airport by Julien Rachel Alder from Turkish Airlines.

Mike Fox began by announcing that Anne Jardine has made the decision to retire from the chamber after 23 years of service and wished her all the best.

Julien Rachel Alder from Turkish Airlines began her presentation by saying the airline has had the best year they have ever had, where between Jan – Aug they saw a 13% increase with a total of 51 million passengers and every aeroplane has been at an average of 81% capacity.

On the 29th October 2018 the new Istanbul Airport, which will be the hub for Turkish Airlines is set to open its doors.

Why Istanbul?

It is a central location within the globe with easy access to both Asia and Africa.

60% of the traffic through Istanbul Airport is passing through onto other destinations with them having an overall 40% of all international traffic.

The new airport has been built on 76.5 million acres, it will have a 90 million passenger capacity in the first phase growing to 200 million once all phases are complete.

There will be a metro line linking the airport to the city of Istanbul plus the current auto bus scheme taking people to both Istanbul and across to the Asia side.

The air traffic control tower sits at 95 metres high and is shaped like a tulip and has already become an iconic feature for the airport.

It has a total of 6 runways with 200 gates with at least 80% of passengers boarding via bridges (no need for the buses). There are smart phone apps sending information to passengers, along with self-service check in for all classes and a separate passport control for business class passengers.

The terminal covers 1.4 million m/sq with 55 million being for duty free and a total of 450 hotel rooms.

Cargo:

There is also a 1.4 million m/sq cargo area with the capacity to handle 5.5 million tonnes of cargo.
