A former primary school teacher, Mike began his political career as a Councillor on Manchester City Council in 1991 where, as the Executive Member for Arts and Leisure, he oversaw the investment strategy which led to the transformation of Central Library.
Mike was Parliamentary Assistant to James Purnell, the MP for Stalybridge and Hyde from May 2008-2010, and then the incoming MP for Jonathan Reynolds from May 2010 –July 2011. He worked for Tameside Council as a Senior Executive Assistant based in the council leader’s office from July 2011 – February 2014.
Mike was also the national Chair of Movement for Change 2010-13 and Acting Chief Executive of the organisation from July 2013 –February 2014.
In a by-election in February 2014 Mike was elected as the Member of Parliament for his home constituency, Wythenshawe and Sale East. In September 2015 Mike was appointed Shadow Minister for International Development. In October 2016 Mike was appointed Shadow Minister for Schools.
Mike plays the bagpipes and flute and is an avid Manchester City fan.
John McHugh is responsible for leading strategic marketing and product development across a £603m mixed-use commercial MAG Property portfolio. He also has an active involvement within Airport City Manchester, the £1 billion landmark joint venture development.
In October 2015 he was responsible, along with Manchester Airport colleagues, for the organisation of the landmark visit of President Xi Jinping of China and Prime Minister David Cameron to Manchester Airport and Airport City, successfully launching the 484,000 sq ft china cluster developments, along with a new direct route to Beijing – generating over 5,000 pieces of global media coverage and reaching over 2bn people.
John was responsible for the market launch in 2015 of the refreshed MAG Property brand proposition at EXPO Real and MIPIM, followed an in-depth period of consultation and engagement with internal and external stakeholders. MAG Property has now started the journey to position itself as a ‘market leading property company in the aviation sector’ through their unique “Airport Property Experts” brand proposition.
He joined MAG Property in 2012 after almost 7 years at Bruntwood, a family-owned commercial property company with offices in the North and Midlands, building brands in the property industry, such as Bruntwood and Manchester Science Parks. Professional experience involves the full marketing mix from marketing strategy and brand management to communications and event management.
